Five Videos That Show Why Rodeos are Dangerous!

Rodeos have long been a part of Western culture. However, the excitement and entertainment come at a significant cost. The human participants face severe risks, and the animals involved are often subjected to harsh conditions and injuries. In 2022, a revealing article highlighted the dangers of rodeos: “A Times’ review of the reports shows that since 2001 — when a state law went into effect requiring all rodeos to have a veterinarian in attendance or on call — more than 125 animal injuries have been reported.” These findings shed light on the dark side of rodeos, raising questions about their ethics and safety.

Ten years ago, a “bucking bronco” was released at this rodeo with a rider on his back. Frightened and overwhelmed, he immediately threw the rider off and flipped over. As he flipped, his head hit the ground and he broke his neck.

2. Bucking Horse Dies

At the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, a bucking horse was released into the pen with a rider. To get the horse to buck, rodeos typically use tight flank straps, spurs, or even electric prods. This makes the horse jump high for people’s entertainment. For this horse, it led to his death. As he bucked, he slammed head-first into the wall.

3. Horse Accident

At the SA Rodeo in 2023, the Budweiser Wagon came out with eight horses pulling it. The horses are given cues to “perform” in front of the crowd. In the bustle of the stadium, one horse “missed their cue” and began turning into the other horses. This tangled up the horses, who were all connected, and injured one of them. Unfortunately, the caption of the video says “The horse is recovered and back to work”, highlighting that no one learned from this accident.

At the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo, animals are treated with cruelty time and time again. Injuries include choking young cows through lassoing, where they are pulled hard onto the ground and can suffer other injuries.

5. Injured Mare Bucked

Despite obvious injuries, including a bleeding mouth, this mare was bucked. Sanctioned by the Reno Cowboys Association, the Reno Rodeo violated the PRCA rules while three judges watched. Announcers even made fun of the animal.

These five videos serve as reminders of the inherent dangers of rodeos. From the potential for severe animal injuries to the undeniable risks faced by human participants, the evidence is clear: rodeos are fraught with peril. Despite the aim to preserve cultural traditions, some are outdated and cruel.
