On August 30, 2023, the highways of Nebraska witnessed an unusual sight – a driver cruising down the road with an extraordinary passenger, a massive Ankole-Watusi bull named Howdy Doody. The scene was certainly eye-catching and garnered the attention of fellow motorists and, eventually, the local police.

Lee Meyer, a resident of Neligh, Nebraska, became the center of attention when he decided to take his Ankole-Watusi bull, Howdy Doody, for a ride. What made this escapade even more remarkable was the fact that Meyer had customized his vehicle to accommodate the enormous bovine. The roof, windows, and windshield of his car had been partially removed to create enough space for Howdy Doody, who was seated in the passenger seat.

But that wasn’t all. Meyer had also affixed a sign to the side of the car that read, “Nebraska’s Big Rodeo Parade – Best Entry,” highlighting his unique and eye-catching choice of transportation. Miniature versions of Howdy Doody’s iconic large horns also adorned the car’s hood.

As the unlikely pair ventured down the Nebraska highway, their journey was cut short by the local authorities. Captain Chad Reiman of the Norfolk Police Division recounted the incident, stating, “The officers received a call referencing a car driving into town that had a cow in it. They thought that it was going to be a calf, something small or something that would actually fit inside the vehicle.”

Upon inspection, the police officers discovered not only the unconventional passenger but also a few traffic violations related to Meyer’s modified vehicle.

The encounter took an unexpected turn when Howdy Doody, likely due to the extreme anxiety and terror of the highway commute and being tethered to the vehicle, left a rather unpleasant surprise for the officers. A spray of the bull’s poop covered the back windows.

Ultimately, the police officers decided to issue warnings to Lee Meyer for the traffic violations and the unconventional transportation of Howdy Doody. Captain Reiman explained, “There were some citable issues with that situation. The officer chose to write him a warning and ask him to take the animal back home and leave the city.”
