Something is happening at the U.S.–Mexico border that would have seemed unusual not long ago. Pet owners are loading their dogs and cats into vans, crossing into Tijuana, and coming home the same day with their animals treated and their wallets considerably less empty. It is called pet medical tourism, and it is growing fast.
Veterinary prices in the United States have risen more than 60 percent since 2014, and a recent survey found that just over half of pet owners have skipped needed care because of cost. For many people, that is not a choice they make lightly. These are family members, and the idea of denying them treatment because of an unaffordable bill is genuinely painful.
According to ABC News, services like MexiVet Express now transport around 80 pets to Tijuana clinics every week. The savings are striking. One New York City dog owner faced a $3,500 to $5,000 bill for dental extractions at home and ended up paying roughly a third of that in Mexico. At clinics like Vet Playas, which reports that 80 percent of its clients come from the United States, orthopedic surgeries that might run $10,000 stateside cost around $3,500 including an MRI and a hospital stay.
There are real considerations to weigh. Travel adds stress to an already unwell animal, and some specialized treatments are simply not available south of the border. The American Veterinary Medical Association also points out that accreditation standards differ. Still, for many families, the alternative is no treatment at all.
What this trend really reflects is a broken system. When health care costs spiral out of reach, whether for humans or the animals who depend on us, people find a way. The underlying problem deserves serious attention.
If you love your companions, advocate for affordable care options in your community. They deserve it.
