Every year, millions of travelers journey to Egypt dreaming of wonder and history, but for the horses and camels working at these iconic sites, each day is defined by pain, hunger, and exhaustion. What happens just beyond the view of tourists is something every conscious traveler deserves to know before booking their next trip.
According to a PETA Asia investigation, animals at landmark destinations like the Great Pyramid of Giza and Luxor’s royal tombs endure relentless abuse. Horses are forced to haul carriage loads of visitors through scorching heat, whipped even when they can barely stand, and denied any veterinary care for their open wounds and injuries. Investigators discovered horse and camel carcasses discarded like garbage on a daily basis. On one visit, a horse still alive was found left to die in agony, while malnourished animals nearby scavenged food from piles of trash just steps away from decomposing bodies.
The suffering does not end there. Camels who are no longer profitable to the tourism trade are sold to slaughterhouses, where their throats are slashed in full view of other sensitive, socially aware creatures and even children. Rather than intervening, local authorities have reportedly helped handlers intimidate visitors who attempted to photograph what they witnessed, with one tourist detained and pressured to delete evidence entirely.
This kind of cruelty persists because tourist demand keeps it alive. Every ride purchased, every photo taken atop a tired animal, directly funds these operations. The good news is that you hold real power here. Choosing not to participate in animal rides or exploitative encounters anywhere in the world, whether in Egypt, Southeast Asia, or even in your own backyard, sends a message that wildlife and working animals deserve dignity, not servitude.
Compassionate travel is absolutely possible. Seeking out sanctuary visits, ethical wildlife observation, and cruelty free experiences allows you to explore our beautiful planet while protecting the beings who share it. Speak up, opt out, and encourage others to do the same.
