A California winery is under fire after offering camel rides at a community event, and the backlash feels deserved. What may have been pitched as light entertainment quickly raised bigger questions about how businesses treat animals when profit and novelty come first.

According to FOX 5 San Diego and KUSI reporter Samantha Mason, Orfila Vineyards and Winery in Escondido recently hosted an event where guests could ride a camel. Some social media users defended the idea as harmless fun. Still, many others saw it differently and called out the winery for turning a living being into a photo prop.

That criticism did not come out of nowhere. The winery faced similar scrutiny last year when it featured a giraffe for guests. So this was not an isolated misstep. Instead, it looks like part of a pattern where exotic wildlife gets pulled into loud, stressful spaces for human amusement.

Animal advocates were blunt. Bryan Pease of the Animal Protection and Rescue League said the camel appeared to be yanked along by a chain around her snout. PETA also filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The group argued that chaotic, alcohol centered events can put both people and captive animals at risk.

This matters beyond one winery. When businesses normalize using exotic creatures as entertainment, it teaches people to see them as attractions instead of sentient beings. That mindset harms the broader environment too, because respect for animals and respect for the Earth are closely linked.

There are better ways to bring people together. Local food, music, art, and plant based events can create joy without putting vulnerable beings in stressful situations. Communities should keep asking for better and choose compassion over spectacle. Please Support kinder choices that protect animals, the planet, and a more vegan future.
