If high cholesterol feels like a problem for later, the latest science says think again. According to Science Alert, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association just published updated cholesterol guidelines. They replace the recommendations from 2018. The core message is urgent. The earlier you take action, the better your odds of a healthy heart for life.

The new guidelines, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, push for earlier cholesterol screenings. They also introduce PREVENT scores, a more personalized way to calculate cardiovascular risk. Updated thresholds help doctors identify who needs medication sooner. About 1 in 4 U.S. adults currently has elevated LDL cholesterol. That is the type that clogs arteries and raises the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The good news is that roughly 80 percent of cardiovascular disease is thought to be preventable. And the foundational advice has not changed. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, get enough sleep, and avoid smoking. For those at higher risk, medication may also play a role. The new guidelines help doctors have that conversation earlier.

That dietary piece carries real weight. According to Harvard Health, a 2023 meta-analysis of 30 trials found plant based diets cut LDL by around 10 percent. What you eat is one of the most direct levers you have over your own health. And a plant forward plate also tends to be gentler on the environment.

Cardiologist Pamela Morris stressed that cholesterol’s effects on heart disease risk begin as early as adolescence. The best time to act is now.

Your heart and the planet will both thank you. Try adding more plant based foods to your plate today.
