A Florida woman has been arrested for abandoning nine dogs and puppies without food or water. The incident occurred in Martin County, Florida, where Deborah Perez, a 62-year-old resident of Stuart, was charged with nine counts of animal abandonment and cruelty.
The incident unfolded when Deborah Perez allegedly decided she could no longer handle her nine dogs, ranging from 4 months to 4 years old, all of them purebred Lhasa Apsos. Perez drove approximately 5 miles from her mobile home in Stuart, north of West Palm Beach, to abandon the dogs in a parking lot near a wooded area. This despicable act took place during sweltering heat, putting the innocent animals’ lives in grave danger.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) reported that the dogs were found in a horrendous condition. They were matted and filthy, with no access to food or water. These confused and frightened animals huddled together for comfort and protection, which ultimately drew the attention of passersby.
Concerned citizens, along with an MCSO animal services supervisor and two officers, rushed to rescue the abandoned dogs. One by one, the dogs were carefully picked up from the wooded area and brought to safety. Meanwhile, Criminal Investigation Detective Christine Polizzi immediately began working on the case. Thanks to tips from the community, Detective Polizzi was able to locate a suspect. Initially, Perez claimed she knew nothing about the abandoned dogs, but after extensive investigation and conversations, she eventually confessed to the cruel act.
Deborah Perez was taken into custody and charged with nine counts of animal abandonment and cruelty. She is currently being held on a $45,000 bond. This arrest sends a strong message that such acts of cruelty against animals will not be tolerated, and those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.
