A common dolphin was recently sighted near Putney Bridge in south-west London, causing concern for its safety. The dolphin, which was struggling against the river’s current, has not been seen since its initial sighting on Thursday.
British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) is keeping an eye on the situation and is calling on the public to report any further sightings. Julia Cable, the charity’s operations director, expressed worries about the dolphin‘s well-being, noting its unusual location and difficulty navigating the tide.
Cable emphasized that the river is not an ideal environment for dolphins, which are typically found in open water. She stressed that while the BDMLR is monitoring the dolphin, they cannot rescue it unless it becomes stranded. The charity urges the public to avoid approaching the dolphin to prevent further disorientation.
The hope is that the dolphin will find its way back to safer waters towards the Thames estuary.
