Climate activists from various groups, including Extinction Rebellion (XR), Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, and the Christian climate coalition, gathered in Parliament Square after four days of peaceful demonstrations, speeches, and workshops. As Extinction Rebellion’s imposed deadline to end new fossil fuel projects and set up a Citizens’ Assembly approached, thousands of participants united on Earth Day for a large-scale event in London.

Former Archbishop John Sentamu attempted to deliver a letter to Shell’s London headquarters but was denied access. Sentamu emphasized the urgency of addressing Climate change and criticized the continued search for new fossil fuel sources, which the International Energy Agency has warned against due to their contributions to the ongoing climate crisis.
XR demanded that the government stop new fossil fuel projects and halt the offering of over 100 new oil exploration licenses. They also called for the establishment of emergency climate assemblies to facilitate a citizen-led democracy to put an end to fossil fuel generation. As the deadline passed on Monday, April 24th, XR co-founder Clare Farrell declared their determination to intensify campaigning.
The coalition of over 200 organizations is expected to grow as they unite in their fight against Climate change. Chris Packham, a renowned naturalist and TV host, addressed the crowds, encouraging everyone who cares about the planet to join the activist community.
Two men who climbed a bridge over the Thames as part of the “Just Stop Oil” actions were sentenced to prison. XR criticized the harsh sentences as a “slap in the face” to those affected by Climate change. As of Monday afternoon, the government had not responded to XR’s demands, and demonstrators prepared to encircle Parliament.
