A young couple from Arkansas has put their wedding plans on hold to help a Goldendoodle puppy they rescued after she was hit by a car. Dylan McCay, 22, and Emily Roberts, 23, first learned about the injured dog through a social media post on Halloween. Without hesitation, they rushed to her side, finding the pup with serious injuries. Despite the challenge, they knew they had to act.
“Her temperament was wonderful. I had my hazard lights on, got out, and she was trying to scoot over toward me,” McCay said. “She put her head on my lap as I’m trying to call emergency hospitals. The whole time, she just wanted to be loved.”
After realizing the severity of the dog’s injuries, including two broken femurs, the couple made the difficult decision to drive 300 miles to Mississippi State University’s Animal Health Center, where they could get the specialized care the dog needed. The couple drained their wedding fund and savings to cover the costly surgery.
“We were just going to do it,” Roberts explained. “We felt like it was something that needed to be done right for her quality of life.”
The dog, originally named Acklin, was later renamed Maple. Thanks to a successful five-hour surgery, Maple’s legs were repaired with screws, pins, and bone plates. Within two days, she was walking again.
“She was walking on both legs two days after surgery,” said Dr. Michael Jaffe, the surgeon at MSU. “She’s a tough little girl. She’s getting stronger now and building that muscle back.”
Roberts was overcome with emotion when she learned Maple would recover fully. “It went OK—it went more than OK. Once they told us both legs were fixed, and she would be as good as new, it was amazing. It felt like a miracle,” she said.
The couple launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the remaining expenses, and the response has been overwhelming. With more than $46,000 raised, McCay and Roberts are deeply grateful for the Support.
“It’s been unbelievable, and we feel really blessed,” Roberts said. “We’re in a constant state of shock and very thankful. It’s beautiful to see that people care about our story and love Maple just as much as we do.”
Although their wedding is postponed, the couple is now focused on Maple’s recovery.
