The Bronx Zoo’s beloved elephant, Happy, has been absent from public view for nearly six weeks, raising alarms among animal rights activists. Happy, a 53-year-old elephant, is reportedly staying inside a small barn within her enclosure—behavior that experts say is highly unusual for an elephant.
Courtney Fern of the Nonhuman Rights Project expressed deep concern over Happy’s unexplained seclusion. “Something is seriously wrong with Happy,” Fern stated, suggesting that the elephant might be suffering from depression, physical pain, or both. This prolonged absence from her usual outdoor area, where she could often be seen near a pond, has led activists to speculate about her well-being.
Despite the zoo’s assurances that Happy is fine and simply choosing to stay out of sight, activists remain skeptical. They argue that this behavior is not typical for an elephant, and they fear it may indicate underlying physical or mental distress.
Happy’s disappearance has reignited discussions about her living conditions, with activists urging the zoo to relocate her to a sanctuary where she could spend her remaining years in a more natural and supportive environment. The zoo, however, has not provided further details on her condition, maintaining that nothing is wrong.
