A Cane Corso dog from Alabama named Bear endured months of hardship with a box stuck on his head until a team of dedicated rescuers successfully freed him. The rescue operation, led by Martin Miller, finally brought relief to Bear, who had eluded capture despite numerous attempts by the City of Mobile Animal Services.
After his rescue on February 21, Bear found not just freedom but also a new family. Martin Miller, one of the rescuers, formed a special bond with the dog and decided to adopt him. In an interview, Miller revealed that Bear now “bears” his last name, signifying their unique connection.
But Bear’s journey doesn’t end there. He’s been appointed as the shelter’s ambassador, tasked with welcoming visitors during the day and returning home with Miller each night. Robert Bryant, the shelter’s director, emphasized the significance of finding the right home for a dog like Bear, given his newfound fame. It was ultimately decided that Miller, who played a pivotal role in Bear’s rescue, would be the perfect fit.
The rescue operation itself was a collaborative effort, involving various individuals from veterinary offices, county officials, volunteers, and city workers. Strategic planning and the use of around 50 barricades were instrumental in safely removing the box from Bear’s head.
Adjusting to life with Bear wasn’t without its challenges, especially for Miller’s other dogs. Initially, there was some apprehension, particularly from Miller’s smaller dog, who was intimidated by Bear’s size. However, Bear’s calm demeanor and friendly nature helped ease the transition, ultimately leading to a harmonious integration into the family.
