A female dog was left on a Maryland sidewalk last month, with nothing but her bowls, patiently waiting for her human who never returned. This story highlights the importance of pet adoption.
The abandoned dog, later named Flora, is a terrier-American bulldog mix, and her ordeal unfolded in Prince George’s County, near Washington, D.C. The circumstances surrounding her abandonment shocked animal welfare workers and touched the hearts of countless individuals who learned about her plight.
Flora’s story came to the attention of the Humane Society of Prince George’s County, which shared her photo on its Facebook page on September 22.
Fortunately, on that same day, 4-year-old Flora was rescued and found to be in fair condition. She was immediately taken to the Prince George’s County Animal Services and Adoption Facility, where her journey to recovery began.
According to Prince George’s County information officer Linda Lowe, Flora arrived at the shelter in a state of fear and had signs indicating that she had been bred multiple times. It is a tragic reminder of the hardships many animal companions endure when they are abandoned or neglected by their humans. However, there is hope for Flora and the other animals like her. Recently, Flora was picked up by one of the county’s rescue partners, and she is now ready to embark on a new chapter in her life—a forever home where she can experience love, care, and stability.
Flora’s story is just one of millions of heartbreaking tales of abandoned animal companions. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a staggering 6.3 million animal companions are surrendered to U.S. shelters each year, averaging approximately 17,260 pets daily. These numbers reveal the importance of spaying and neutering and ensuring animal companions receive proper care throughout their lives.
