Vegan Recipes for Día de Los Muertos!

Dia de los Muertos

Each year, as the United States prepares for Halloween and all that comes with it — the trick-or-treating, the costume parties, and the general embracing of all things spooky — there’s a different kind of holiday happening just south of the border. In Mexico, late October is when Día de Muertos takes place. Although it is often conflated with Halloween, they are very different holidays. While Halloween is a fun, casual celebration, in Mexico and a few other South American countries, Día de Muertos is a three-day celebration centered around honoring the memory of deceased relatives.

From October 31st, All Hallows Eve, to November 2nd, All Souls Day, families gather and celebrate with decorations like marigolds, colorful paper decorations, cardboard skeletons, incense, sugar skulls, and traditional holiday foods. Families will often clean the graves of their deceased loved ones before decorating them with various offerings in honor of their memory and to aid in their spiritual journey. It is a tradition that dates back to pre-Columbian cultures, which were dedicated to the goddess of death.

If you’re getting ready to celebrate Día de Muertos with your family and wondering which foods you can make vegan, then we have just the recipes for you, thanks to the Food Monster App:

Azucena Noriega’s Orange Olive Oil Rolls

Azucena Noriega’s vegan Orange Olive Oil Rolls are inspired by pan de muerto, a sweet roll flavored with orange flower water that’s made during the weeks leading up to the Mexican Día de Muertos. The dough is soft and chewy, with a citrusy filling, and sweet orange glaze. They’re sweet, but not overly so.

This spiced fruit stew by Kimberly Espinel, or Colada Morada as it’s officially called, is a family favorite in Ecuador. It’s not necessarily super healthy as it’s got a fair amount of sugar in it, but it is homemade, full of nourishing fruit, and vegan. In Ecuador, people make Colada Morada for the Day of the Dead.
