It’s Girl Scout cookies season — and you know what that means! It means that we will be stocking up on Thin Mints – which we will promptly hide in our room so we don’t have to share, thankyouverymuch.
If you’re looking to eat more plant-based foods, you might find yourself massively disappointed that many of your favorite cookies, sadly, contain eggs or dairy. But did you know that Girl Scouts of the USA actually offers a few vegan varieties? Oh, happy day! Unfortunately, not all Girl Scout cookies are created equal and depending on where you live, a cookie that would be vegan in one state might not by in your own.
While in the past, Girl Scouts were in charge of baking and selling their own cookies (you can find recipes in vintage Girl Scout handbooks), in the contemporary era, there are two bakeries that preside over the making of everyone’s favorite cookies: ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers. ABC Bakers makes five varieties of vegan cookies, whereas Little Brownie Bakers only has Thin Mints on their vegan roster. Here’s a handy map that details which state gets what, but as some commenters have pointed out, it’s not entirely accurate, but a good place to start!
Now, let’s get to it — here’s which Girl Scout cookies are vegan.
No matter where you are in the United States, Thin Mints cookies are vegan — and we’re thankful because these little wafers of pure, chocolate-covered chocolate mint cookie goodness are arguably the best Girl Scout cookie. In fact, Thin Mints account for 25 percent of Girl Scout cookie sales – that’s more than any other cookie! We know that when we have a box, we’re in very real danger of devouring an entire sleeve in one sitting.
Anyone who’s ever been a Girl Scout (or Boy Scout) probably has fond memories regarding roasting marshmallows for S’mores over an open fire at one of the yearly camping trips. You can relive that (without the fire) with the S’mores cookies made by ABC Bakers, which is described as a “crispy graham cookie double dipped in yummy crème icing and finished with a scrumptious chocolatey coating (WHOA!)” If you’re in Little Brownie Bakers Territory, you’ll have to try your luck online for vegan S’mores cookies.
Lemonades, one of the newer cookie varieties, is described as a “tangy lemon-icing-topped shortbread cookie,” which pretty much means that we need a box right now. They’re also, reportedly, huge. Just be sure that yours are made by ABC Bakers!
If you were a fan of Trefoils, you’re probably going to love Thanks-a-Lots, one of the Girl Scout’s cookie varieties. These cookies are described as “tasty shortbread cookies with fudge,” which is enough to make us crave a box. Just be sure to make sure that yours are made by ABC Bakers before you buy.
Peanut Butter Patties, also known as the cookie formerly known as Tagalongs, are vegan — thank the cookie fairies. The ABC Bakers version of these chocolate-coated shortbread cookies with creamy peanut butter on top is entirely vegan. Huzzah!
We’re definitely going to need a glass of non-dairy milk at the ready for all these vegan Girl Scout cookies. Which one is your favorite?
Of course, if you’re looking for vegan cookie recipes, you can find tons on the Food Monster App (available for both Android and iPhone). With over 8,000 vegan recipes (with over 10 new recipes added daily), there’s something for everyone — including vegan versions of some of the Girl Scout cookies that didn’t make this list.

Peanut Butter Patties (I just got a box and they\’re still called Tagalongs) have whey in them and are therefore NOT vegan. It says "contains milk" as well.
I gave read the ingredients in the boxes of the cookies listed above, and except for the Thin Mints, the boxes I checked, still have animal ingredients.
Although the Girl Scout organization is trying to promote "healthy vegan cookies", they are still off the mark when it comes to a healthy snack cookie. ALL their products use palm oil, known to raise "bad" LDL cholesterol, as well as sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. I love supporting the Girl Scouts, but do so with a donation and pass on these very unhealthy cookies.
