Just a few weeks ago, we shared some exciting news about a yummy new product: chicken free chicken, a plant-based alternative to chicken made from pea protein by Sunfed Meats. The chicken free chicken hit the shelves in New Zealand back in July and well, the product has been so much of a hit that stores are having a hard time keeping up with the demand!
Sunfed Meats shared on Facebook, “Hey Sunfedites – looks like we’ve sold out again from most stores despite stocking up the supermarkets … Rest assured we’re working hard to expand supply to meet this amazingly high demand.”
The chicken free chicken is strategically placed in the meat aisle, and the goal is to create meat alternatives that taste exactly like their counterparts. On their website, Sunfed describes their products as such, “Sunfed meats are made from plant protein, they cook, feel and taste just like animal meat but are healthier, both for you and the planet.” Their chicken free chicken is soy free, gluten free, vegan, made from peas, and packed with wonderful nutrients like protein, iron, and zinc. Looks like Sunfed Meats’ strategy is clearly working. How great to see such a high demand for a plant-based product?!
Thanks to rising animal welfare, health, and environmental concerns, plant-based meats are on the rise with consumers — the success of which can be seen in the profits seen in the plant-based protein sector. With this shift away from meat toward more clean, plant-based protein alternatives, many new start-ups offering innovative products have jumped in to meet growing demand. In fact, the plant-based food sector is currently valued at $5 billion!
With this in mind, Sunfed Meats is certainly making a good choice releasing this product because plant-based foods are the future.
The product is currently only available in New Zealand – Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, and Wellington, to be specific – but they’re looking to expand (hint: come to States!). In the meantime, if you don’t live in New Zealand and you’re a glutton for punishment and want to see this chicken free chicken in action, check out this delicious video.
