Have you ever thought of making your own vanilla extract? It's super easy, only takes two ingredients and one minute of your time - the rest of the time you just wait. Do you have a friend or family member who loves to bake? Well, every baker is happy about a good vanilla extract and this one would make the perfect gift this holiday season!
Homemade Vanilla Extract [Vegan]
- 1/2 cup of vodka
- 1 fresh vanilla bean
- Split the vanilla bean half lengthwise with a sharp knife. Scrape out the seeds with the knife and put it into a nice bottle. Add the bean inside the bottle.
- Cover the vanilla bean with vodka.
- Store in a cool dark place and in the first few weeks shake the bottle a few times. It will be ready in a month or so (it should get that dark color).
It's like wine, the flavors get stronger over time however, you should NOT use this after about 6 months. Store in an airtight bottle in a cool, dark place, and shake before using.
