The co-founder and CEO of Whole Foods Market, John Mackey, could be opening plant-based restaurants and wellness centers. Last year Mackey announced that he would be retiring from the company come September 1, 2022.

“As a co-founder of Whole Foods, I’ve often explained my relationship to the company with a parent-child metaphor,” he wrote. “All parents reach a time when they must let go and trust that the values imparted will live on within their children. That time has nearly come for me and for Whole Foods.”

He said that come next year, he would be off to pursue other life passions. According to Bloomberg, those other passions include opening a chain of plant-based restaurants and wellness centers that offer fitness and spa services.

Mackey is a partner in Healthy America LLC, which is a startup that raised about $31 million from investors earlier this year, Bloomberg reported. The venture aims to launch a “national network” of medical wellness centers and plant-based restaurants.

A job posting that has since closed calls Healthy America “an evidence-based lifestyle company, leading the convergence of culinary, healthcare, and wellness. For the first time ever, we are bringing together all three under one roof, to meaningfully transform the health and wellbeing of individuals.”

The listing writes that in their medical and wellness centers, they will take a “holistic approach” to health and take the best parts of western and eastern medicine. The mission of the company is “to establish a new model of care which heals the whole person by focusing on prevention & reversal of disease through evidence-based healthcare utilizing nutrition and lifestyle, and aspires to elevate each individual’s health to the most optimized state possible.”
