Hooray Foods has announced that its plant-based bacon will be arriving at Whole Foods stores across the country this fall.

The plant-based bacon will be available at 300 Whole Foods Markets in Northern California, Southern Pacific, Midwest, Southwest, North Atlantic, South, and Northeast regions starting this November.

Hooray Foods captures the classic, smoky taste of bacon by using liquid smoke, umami seasoning made with shiitake mushrooms, maple syrup, salt, and beet juice concentrate. The plant-based bacon even sizzles like the animal-based product while it cooks.

After witnessing the wildfires in California last year, Hooray Foods’s founder, Sri Artham, founded the company to address the environmental impact of the animal agriculture industry. The U.S. raises around 120 million pigs for food each year, many of whom are raised in confined crates without fresh air or clean water, access sunlight, or the space to even turn around.

“When the Camp Fire hit here in California in November last year, for three days you couldn’t walk outside in San Francisco. There was just too much smog in the air. That’s the moment that made me switch from social issues in our food system to environmental,” Artham said to VegNews.

As plant-based meat companies exploded into the retail space in recent years, Artham switched his own diet to be more plant-based and hopes his product will help others rethink their diets.

Made with coconut oil, rice flour, tapioca starch, Hooray Foods’ bacon is gluten-free, allergy-free, and soy-free. The company has received positive feedback on the flavor and texture of its product. It also plans to fund non-profit animal farms and sanctuaries to help support pigs rescued from production and abuse.

The plant-based meat industry continues to skyrocket, releasing new products every month and expanding into new markets.
