Is it just us, or is fall the perfect season? The cool, crisp weather that calls for cozying up in an oversized sweater, the hot beverages, the changing leaves, and the food … they all make up for the loss of long, sunny days. Apart from seasonal fare, we have to admit that we’re also huge fans of all the game day gatherings because it gives us an excuse (not that an excuse is ever required to eat the food you like) to whip up batches of all our unhealthy, fried favorites. When we think of unhealthy, fried foods that we love, the first thing that pops up in our minds is vegan mozzarella sticks.
We just can’t help but love warm, gooey mozzarella that’s breaded, fried, and served with a side of marinara sauce. The classic way of preparing them involves dredging mozzarella cheese in a mixture of egg and milk, rolling it in breadcrumbs, and then repeating until the cheese is completely coated. It’s anything but plant-based, we know. But, thanks to the rise in popularity of vegan cheese, vegan mozzarella sticks are possible, and they’re delicious. Just check out the recipe by Rhea Parsons below, which are crispy on the outside, with gooey, cheesy goodness on the inside.
Oh, and P.S.: They’re gluten-free.

Rhea makes her mozzarella sticks by slicing a block of vegan mozzarella (a store-bought variety will likely work best) into evenly-shaped sticks, then dipping them in a mixture of chickpea flour, cornmeal, and rice cereal with herbs and vegan Parmesan. They’re then set in the freezer for half-an-hour, then fried until crispy and golden. Don’t forget the marinara!
