Last year, Scandinavian Airlines began a new sustainability initiative to serve fresh, locally sourced food on all their flights. The new menu, dubbed ‘New Nordic by SAS’ featured nordic specialities grown organically and locally received ‘Best in-flight meal packaging” in the Travel Top 50, 2018/2019 survey.
Not content to rest on their laurels, Scandinavian Airlines took their whole foods initiative to the next level. As of last weekend, the New Nordic in flight meal will feature a vegan menu. According to Scandinavian, passengers will be able to enjoy ‘thyme roasted Hallestad mushrooms with a lentil and beet flavored wheat salad tossed with black beans from Oland and tarragon, sliced golden beetroot and hummus made of yellow Vretart pea from Bjalosa, served with parsley vinaigrette and vinegar roasted buckwheat’.
The airline will test the new menu over the next two weeks to gauge interest, and see how it fares against the traditional menu. Diners will still have the option of eating the regular menu if they choose, but the plant-based menu is expected to be successful.
“Sustainability is a main focus for SAS and as we see an increasing interest in a plant-based diet in the society, it is important to have a vegan dish on a trial as one of the regular meals“ said Karl Sandlund, Executive Vice President Commercial.
With brands like Pepsi and Sodexo dipping toes into the plant-based food market, corporations that once seemed immune to the vegan craze are now making the switch. Time will tell whether or not this vegan airline menu will stand the test of time, but if recent developments are any indication, the menu may just be an idea whose time has come.
Of course, you don’t have to hop a flight to Reykjavik to get some delicious scandinavian vegan food. Check out these tasty Nordic recipes, courtesy of the Food Monster App.
