UK Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has never been shy about their desire to appeal to vegan and other plant-based shoppers. As the second largest grocer in Great Britain, the food provider has made great strides in spearheading the UK’s vegan evolution. From vegan blue cheese and plant-based meat alternatives like veggie bacon, plant-based eaters have reason to feel welcome at Sainsbury’s, but the company continues to prove it isn’t through yet.
This Tuesday, the grocer began stocking a new line of plant-based French pastries, including pain au chocolat and croissants. It’s hard enough finding vegan versions of these French classics, let alone with the added convenience of grabbing them off a grocery store shelf. Thanks to French pastry manufacturer La Boulangère, these flaky, buttery delights are now one convenient shopping trip away.
Stocking their pastries at a major retailer like Sainsbury’s might sound like a dream come true, but according to La Boulangère, there’s a deeper commitment behind their products: “We’re living in an exciting era where health, Climate change and animal welfare are key drivers for a growing community embracing a plant-based lifestyle. This is why we’re proud to introduce our vegan alternative to your breakfast, lunch or on-the-go needs.”
If that’s not enough to tempt you, the pastries are priced at £2.50 for 6, making them affordable to boot. Who said ethics have to cost you?
Of course, if you’re not in the UK, that doesn’t mean your pastry hopes are dashed! Check out these recipes, courtesy of the Food Monster App!

Beignets come in a lot of versions. With batter and then fried in oil, with puff pastry and fried in oil, but this version of Oven-Baked Puff Pastry Apple Beignets from Mireille Aikman has a healthier baked spin. When you oven bake puff pastry it gets really crisp. When you fry them in oil the pastry will set out even more but will be more soft. Just choose what you like best.
