Italian Prosecutors Pursue Manslaughter Charges After “Vegan” Tiramisu Kills Woman

The tragic death of a 20-year-old woman, Anna Bellisario, due to a severe allergic reaction after consuming a ‘vegan’ tiramisu has led to a legal battle in Italy. The makers of the dessert, GLG SRL, are now facing manslaughter charges as prosecutors push for accountability.

Anna Bellisario, who suffered from a dairy allergy, lost her life after ingesting traces of mascarpone cheese in the supposedly dairy-free dessert. The incident occurred during a meal at a fast food restaurant in Milan, where Bellisario had diligently checked the label and sought additional information regarding her allergy before consuming the dessert. Despite her precautions, Bellisario experienced a severe allergic reaction after just two spoonfuls of the tiramisu. Even after taking her asthma medication and cortisone, she succumbed to anaphylactic shock and passed away in hospital days later.

Following Bellisario’s tragic death, Italian authorities took action, withdrawing several vegan products from the market due to suspected allergen contamination. Many of these products were traced back to GLG SRL, raising questions about the company’s manufacturing processes and labeling accuracy.

Milan’s Deputy Prosecutor, Tiziana Siciliano, and Prosecutor Luca Gaglio have pushed for the indictment of GLG SRL’s bosses, Giuseppe Loiero and Giovanna Anoia, citing damning communications between the two. The prosecutors allege complicity in manslaughter, pointing to the company’s failure to consider allergy sufferers in their recipe development and labeling practices.
