Vegan British Homity Pie

Homity Pie is a traditional British dish dating back to World War 2. This simple yet flavorful dish consists of a flaky golden pastry, potatoes, onions, and cream. This deliciously creamy vegan version lives up to the original and is just as filling. This recipe makes the perfect family dinner or centerpiece for a large gathering.

What You’ll Need:

How to Make Vegan Homity Pie:

  1. To make the pastry, start by whisking together the dry ingredients: flour, salt, and cayenne. Then, mix in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  2. Next, add in the dairy-free milk until a soft dough starts to form. Roll the pastry out on a floured surface and line a greased, loose-bottomed tin.
  3. Peel and chop the potatoes into small cubes and boil for 4-5 minutes. Drain the potatoes. Peel and slice the leeks and onions and add them to a pan until they soften.
  4. Combine the filling ingredients, mix well, and add seasoning. Add it into the pastry case and level out, pushing right to the edges. Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

Helpful Tips to Keep in Mind:

  • You can substitute the crust with your favorite gluten-free pie crust.
  • Be careful about leaving excess pastry hanging over the edges of the tin before you bake it in the oven.
  • This recipe pairs nicely with steamed vegetables. Since this dish is similar to a quiche, it also pairs nicely with a salad.
  • Leftovers will last in the fridge for about 4-5 days.
