French Court Suspends Ban on Using the Word “Steak” for Vegan Steak

France’s ongoing debate over the labeling of veggie burgers has taken another twist. The country’s top administrative court suspends a decree prohibiting plant-based products from using meat-related terms. This decision comes after the French government issued a decree in February aimed at banning terms like “steak” on the labels of vegetarian products, arguing that such terms should be reserved for meat exclusively.

Notably, in French, a veggie burger is commonly referred to as a veggie “steak.” The decree targeted 21 terms traditionally associated with meat products, including “escalope,” “ham,” “filet,” and “prime rib,” stating they were off-limits for plant-based alternatives.

The move was prompted by complaints from the meat industry, which argued that terms like “vegetarian ham” or “vegan sausage” were misleading to consumers. However, this latest suspension by the state council reflects growing uncertainty over the legality of such bans. The council cited “serious doubt” regarding the legality of the decree, pending clarification from the Court of Justice of the European Union on whether such measures align with EU law.

The backdrop to this legal saga includes broader tensions within France’s agricultural sector, where farmers have been protesting against environmental regulations and facing stiff competition from cheaper imports. The initial decree was seen as a response to pressures from the meat industry, but its suspension underscores the complexities surrounding food labeling regulations and the balancing act between consumer clarity and industry interests.
