When this woman’s husband was in their yard and heard a deer bleating like a sheep, she never could have imagined she would go on to raise the lone baby deer. The baby deer, Thor, stood at the man’s feet, and the couple knew that they should call the vet as soon as possible.
After they took him to the vet, they discovered that Thor had been abandoned and his mother had most likely died.
“They spend the first couple of weeks just lying quietly until their mother come and feeds them,” the woman, Dawn, told GeoBeats.
The fact that Thor was out alone was not a good sign, but the vet did not have any room for him, so Thor was sent back with the couple.
“That’s the moment we became instant deer parents,” Dawn said.
They knew that the deer could not be a pet, and instead, they wanted to figure out a way that they could still raise him as a wild animal. They built a large enclosure for him, and for the first month and a half, Dawn slept outside with him in a tent near him to make sure that he was safe at night. She fed him every three hours and did a lot of research to make sure that she was helping the baby all that she could.
By the time Thor hit four months old, he was out in the wild again, but he always seemed to come back to visit his family. When she would call Thor out into the open in the backyard, Thor would come running over and get a bottle of milk from his humans. If she didn’t come fast enough, Thor would wait on the deck for his milk.
Although he goes away for periods, he always ends up coming back to hang out with his favorite humans. Even when Thor came back one time with a leg injury, he let Dawn tend to him and help him recover. The pair truly have an amazing bond, and it’s heartwarming to see.
NOTE: Do not try to help wildlife of any sort unless you are trained. Find a local wildlife rehabber/rescuer or veterinarian ASAP, or call a rescue hotline. Here are some that might help!
