There is a problem with the “Grade A” stamp on America’s natural gas. According to The Guardian, highly rated gas facilities are still leaking invisible plumes of methane and toxic chemicals into the surrounding air. Those plumes do not show up on the paperwork. They show up in the sky.

Methane is the primary component of natural gas and a potent super pollutant. Over a 20 year period, it traps roughly 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide. It is responsible for around 30 percent of Global warming since industrialization began. The trouble is that methane is invisible, making it easy to miss and to underreport. According to MethaneSAT, actual Permian Basin emissions are roughly four times higher than what companies report to the EPA. Nine of the ten worst methane leaks in the U.S. in 2025 were in Texas. Cutting methane quickly is one of the fastest available tools against warming.

And yet gas sites continue to carry high ratings that imply clean, responsible operations. That gap between ratings and reality is not an accident. A 2023 report from Oil Change International and Earthworks found gas certification programs to be highly unreliable. Field monitors repeatedly failed to detect significant Pollution events. According to Yale E360, a study in Environmental Research Communications confirmed that leaked gas is far more than just methane. Researchers found that leaks release benzene and other carcinogens that damage bone marrow and the immune system. Benzene alone reached unhealthy levels in 99.7 percent of major leaks studied.

The burden falls hardest on communities living closest to these sites. The Trump administration has continued rolling back regulations designed to curb these emissions, leaving people and the environment increasingly exposed.

These are not just climate numbers. They are a public health crisis hiding in plain sight. Our planet can no longer absorb our indifference. Demand real accountability from the fossil fuel industry and push for clean energy for everyone.
