Dogs are often celebrated for their keen sense of smell and exceptional hearing, but their vision is frequently misunderstood. Contrary to popular belief, dogs do not see the world in black and white. They can perceive colors, though their spectrum is more limited compared to humans.
Dogs experience color vision similar to people with red-green colorblindness, according to Mary Lassaline, a veterinary ophthalmologist at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. This means dogs can see certain colors but not others, perceiving the world in shades of blue and yellow.
The key to understanding this lies in the types of photoreceptors in their eyes. Photoreceptors are cells in the retina that convert light into electrical signals, which are then processed by the brain to form visual images. There are two main types of photoreceptors: rods and cones. Rods are sensitive to low light and motion, while cones detect color.
Humans have a retina rich in cones, particularly concentrated in the center, allowing for detailed and colorful vision. Dogs, on the other hand, have retinas dominated by rods, enhancing their ability to see in dim light and detect movement but limiting their color perception. Only about 3% of the photoreceptors in a dog’s retina are cones, compared to 5% in humans.
Humans are trichromatic, possessing three types of cones that detect a wide range of colors. Dogs are dichromatic, with only two types of cones, enabling them to see primarily blue and yellow hues while reds and greens appear as shades of gray. For example, a red flower with a green stem might look like a gray flower with yellowish leaves to a dog.
