According to reporting by the New York Times, President Trump’s second term has brought sweeping setbacks for America’s environmental movement. Hard-fought gains under the Biden administration, including the landmark Inflation Reduction Act, are being dismantled at record speed. Coal is being revived, oil and gas are being promoted, and long-standing environmental regulations—some dating back to the 1970s—are being gutted. Activists and experts warn this is a “generational loss” for climate progress.

The ripple effects are being felt across the movement. The Sierra Club has faced internal turmoil and leadership crises, while Greenpeace now faces nearly $670 million in damages from a lawsuit tied to its opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline. Nonprofits like Rewiring America have slashed staff after Trump froze billions in clean energy grants. Even large philanthropic players like Bill Gates’s Breakthrough Energy have scaled back U.S. lobbying, redirecting funds elsewhere.

But while Washington turns back the clock, environmental groups are finding new ways to fight back. Organizations such as Earthjustice have already launched nearly 100 legal actions this year, blocking some of the administration’s rollbacks in court. The Natural Resources Defense Council is focusing on state-level policies and expanding its work internationally, supporting initiatives like Vermont’s push to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for climate damage. Activists argue the movement must now emphasize immediate benefits—like lower energy bills from clean power—to win broader public Support.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. Scientists have repeatedly warned that every delay in cutting emissions makes climate disasters more destructive. Communities already facing flooding, extreme heat, and pollution are the ones who stand to lose the most if protections are stripped away.

This is a moment to stay loud, visible, and committed. Supporting clean energy, protecting wildlife, and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels isn’t just about climate—it’s about justice, health, and the future we choose. Every action counts, from backing grassroots groups to shifting toward plant-based diets that cut emissions and save animals. The fight is far from over, and collective action is more important now than ever.
