According to reporting from The New York Times by Maxine Joselow and Lisa Friedman, the Trump administration has unveiled its most consequential attack yet on climate action: a proposal to scrap the EPA’s 2009 “endangerment finding.” That scientific determination, affirmed by both the Obama and Biden administrations, declared that greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide pose a danger to human health and the environment. It is the backbone of federal authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate emissions from cars, power plants, and industry.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced that rescinding the finding would erase emissions limits for vehicles, the largest source of climate Pollution in the United States. Transportation alone produces so much carbon that if America’s cars and trucks were a country, they would rank as the fourth-largest emitter in the world. The rollback would not only undermine current safeguards but also make it far harder for any future administration to regulate fossil fuel Pollution.
Environmental advocates warn the stakes could not be higher. Dan Becker of the Center for Biological Diversity called it “the biggest single step any nation has taken to save oil, save consumers money at the pump and combat Global warming”—now on the verge of being thrown away. Former Vice President Al Gore condemned the plan for ignoring science in favor of fossil fuel profits.
If finalized, the move would entrench climate denial at the federal level just as the world scrambles to hold Global warming below 1.5°C. Instead of rolling back protections, the U.S. should be accelerating the transition to clean energy, plant-based food systems, and greener infrastructure. Individual choices—from reducing meat consumption to demanding bold policy—still matter. Now is the time to stand up for the planet, not let corporate polluters call the shots.
