At the United Nations General Assembly this week, President Donald Trump dismissed Climate change as the “greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world,” attacking global leaders for investing in renewable energy and sustainability. According to Axios, Trump claimed carbon footprints were a “hoax” and mocked international commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions—even as scientific evidence shows the planet is rapidly warming.
The timing of his remarks is striking. Global average temperatures have already risen about 1.3°C since pre-industrial times, with the steepest increases in the last 40 years. Seas are rising, extreme weather is worsening, and food security is threatened by droughts, floods, and crop failures. The U.S. Department of Agriculture warns that disruptions to the global food system will trigger higher prices and declining food safety—impacts that will hit the most vulnerable first.
By deriding climate science at the world’s largest diplomatic gathering, Trump deepened a divide between the U.S. and allies still working to uphold the Paris Agreement. He has already moved to withdraw America from the accord and slash funding for UN climate programs, undercutting efforts to prevent warming beyond 2°C—a threshold scientists say would unleash devastating effects on ecosystems and communities.
Reality, however, is not on his side. Glaciers are collapsing, seas are swallowing coasts, and Earth is showing us in real time what unchecked emissions mean. Every denial delays solutions like clean energy, reforestation, and the global shift toward plant-based diets that reduce emissions and protect animals.
Trump’s words may fuel cynicism, but they also sharpen the contrast between denial and action. The science is clear, and so is our agency: we can choose to invest in a livable future, protect communities, and stand with the planet—not against it.
