TikTok Video Shows Heartbroken Dog After Being Surrendered

A heartbroken dog is going viral after her reaction to being surrendered was posted on TikTok. As shelters and rescues around the world face climbing populations and lower adoption rates, many animals find themselves facing an uphill battle in the search for a new home. Many of them have no idea why their humans were unable to keep them. The video was posted by @thefabfiverescuedogs and highlights the reaction of one heartbroken dog when she finds herself left behind.

The video is captioned “This is what it looks like when a dog is surrendered. It’s heartbreaking for us to watch them thinking you will return.” In the video, a brown and black dog can be seen anxiously looking at the door of a rescue center. She can also be seen lying near her things that were dropped off at the rescue along with her. Text overlay on the video reads “This is what it looks like when you decide you don’t want your dog after two years, and drop her off at a shelter. They frantically paw at the door, and look everywhere for you. She then laid with her things thinking you would be right back to get her. She checked the door for over an hour, still hopeful that you were coming back to take her home. Now the rescue gets to comfort her, and pick up the pieces of her broken heart, all because she was ‘too much work’ and you didn’t want to deal with her.”

The video of the heartbroken dog has been watched over 1.1 million times on TikTok. While some viewers were sympathetic about the amount of work that a dog requires, they ultimately were upset that the dog had been abandoned. Although inflation, unstable housing, and other factors can contribute to the decision to give up an animal, it is important to remember that there are other options. Shelters and rescues are currently overwhelmed with animals. Sadly, many of them have had to resort to euthanizing healthy animals to free up space for incoming dogs and cats.

Many shelters and rescues offer assistance to people who are struggling to afford their animal companions. They may have programs that provide assistance finding pet-friendly housing, free food, and low or no-cost veterinary care. For those who are ready to welcome an animal companion into their family, please consider adoption. Even if you are not able to adopt a dog or cat, becoming a foster home for an animal in need can help alleviate shelter crowding and reduce stress for the animal.
