One of the most recent trends on TikTok is called the Salt Water Flush, and users claim that the salt water flushes to “clean and flush” the “sludge” out of their guts or to achieve short-term weight loss. However, experts are mixed on the efficacy and warn that it could be harmful to health, especially to those with prior medical conditions.

The hashtag #saltflush has nearly 300,000 views, and instructional videos are going viral. Although most TikTokers are warning people to do their research, comments like this: “I will not research on my own I will trust tik tok,” by user Brooke Boelte are particularly concerning as many people do just take what people say on the internet as fact.
Dieticians and other health experts have been speaking out about the practice that they call dangerous. Some physicians are divided on if the trend works. A medically-reviewed article from Medical News Today said that while salt water can help flush the body, the body is capable of cleaning itself without detoxifying flushes.
Before trying any new health trends, it is extremely important to talk to your doctor or a certified expert.
