Thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, has been a point of contention in vaccine debates for decades, especially following high-profile claims by figures like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. During his first meeting as head of a downsized vaccine advisory panel, Kennedy criticized thimerosal, calling it a “toxic neurotoxin” and accusing health agencies of hiding its dangers. He argued that high levels of mercury in flu shots could harm pregnant women and children.

However, experts and years of research contradict these claims. Thimerosal, which contains ethylmercury, is not the same as methylmercury, the form found in fish that can accumulate in the body and cause harm. Ethylmercury, by contrast, is processed and excreted quickly by the body, making it far less likely to cause any toxic effects. Studies have shown that thimerosal-containing vaccines do not lead to higher mercury levels in infants, nor do they pose a risk to pregnant women who receive the flu vaccine. Furthermore, no evidence links thimerosal to autism, despite ongoing claims by antivaccine activists.

Thimerosal was phased out of most childhood vaccines in 2001, with all vaccines routinely given to children now available in thimerosal-free versions. Today, thimerosal is primarily found in a small portion of flu vaccines, specifically multi-dose vials. These vials make up about 4% of the U.S. flu shot supply, with the remaining 96% being thimerosal-free, including vaccines for children and pregnant women.

Scientific studies have consistently found no link between thimerosal and autism, or any other adverse effects, leading experts to assert that its removal was a precautionary measure. Despite this, the continued spread of misinformation raises unnecessary concerns, which could ultimately hinder vaccine accessibility and increase costs.

It’s time to trust science. Vaccines are safe, and the focus should be on ensuring everyone has access to these life-saving tools, free from fear and misinformation.
