As holiday shoppers gear up for the busiest season of the year, a concerning report from Toxic-Free Future, a non-profit dedicated to consumer product safety, reveals that major retailers are not doing enough to eliminate hazardous chemicals and plastics from their offerings. According to the 2024 Retailer Report Card, the 50 largest retailers across the U.S. and Canada, which represent a staggering $4 trillion in annual revenue, have collectively earned a dismal average grade of D+ in chemical safety efforts.

The timing of the report’s release, just weeks before Black Friday, is strategic, emphasizing the urgency of addressing these issues during a peak shopping period. Mike Schade, director of the Mind the Store program and co-author of the report, stresses the dual purpose of the publication: to inform consumers and hold retailers accountable for their role in distributing products laden with harmful substances.

A shocking 17 of these top retailers landed in the report’s “Toxic Hall of Shame,” with grades of F. This includes widely recognized names like McDonald’s, Chipotle, Subway, and several prominent department stores such as Macy’s and Nordstrom. On the flip side, Apple, Sephora, Target, and Walmart set positive examples by scoring A grades for their proactive measures in chemical management and transparency.

The report highlights a tougher grading scale than in previous years, reflecting more stringent criteria for retailer evaluations. Retailers are now assessed not only on their commitments to eliminate dangerous chemicals but also on their transparency regarding product contents and the safety of chemical substitutes in their supply chain.

Among the notable chemicals of concern are PFAS, phthalates, bisphenols, and flame retardants, all linked to serious health risks such as cancer, reproductive issues, and endocrine disruption. The prevalence of these substances in consumer products poses significant risks, underscoring the need for more aggressive action from retailers.

Despite the grim findings, there is a silver lining: 68% of the retailers showed improvement by adopting policies to ban harmful chemicals, though many still fall short in ensuring the safety of their product reformulations. This report serves as a critical call to action for both retailers and consumers to prioritize health and safety, particularly during a time when shopping activity reaches its peak.
