Menstrual Pads Lawsuit Alleges Toxic Chemical Contamination

A new legal battle over the safety of Carefree menstrual pads has come to light. A lawsuit filed in California accuses the brand and its parent company, Edgewell, of contaminating their products with toxic PFAS chemicals, known for their long-lasting presence in the environment and links to severe health risks. Ecological Alliance, a consumer advocacy group, is pushing for these chemicals to be removed or for product warnings to be added.

PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” include over 15,000 compounds known for their resistance to breaking down. These substances have been tied to various health concerns, from cancer and immune system problems to reproductive issues. Vineet Dubey, the attorney representing Ecological Alliance, voiced concerns about the direct exposure risk, saying, “This is a product that has direct exposure into the bloodstream because of the way it’s used and positioned on women’s bodies, so this is alarming, and it’s scary.”

Ecological Alliance’s tests revealed alarming levels of PFOA, one of the most hazardous PFAS compounds. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers any PFOA presence in drinking water unsafe, and Carefree’s pads were found to release the compound at a rate of 756 parts per trillion per hour—well above safety standards.

Research has shown that skin may absorb PFAS at higher rates than previously believed, amplifying the risk of using products like menstrual pads for extended periods. While it remains uncertain how these chemicals ended up in the products, some theories include intentional use for waterproofing or contamination during manufacturing. PFAS have also been discovered in similar personal care items like diapers and toilet paper.

The suit seeks a halt in sales until the products are made free from harmful chemicals. Edgewell has yet to respond to these claims, and past legal efforts suggest that while some companies have reformulated products to eliminate toxic substances, not all have willingly complied. Dubey expressed hope but also skepticism, noting, “I hope [Carefree] acts responsibly… but I never put it past corporations to fight to death to do the wrong thing.”
