These 2-week old kittens were rescued just hours before being euthanized at a shelter and were given a second chance at life!

“The sad truth about neonatal kittens without mamas is that they are the most euthanized population in shelters,” said their rescuer.

Since being rescued, these babies have let their personalities shine. They love cuddles and have a zest for life.

“Cookie is the most affectionate kitten I’ve ever fostered. He is a cuddly purr machine. He wants to be on me every chance he gets! (You can see just how snuggly he is in my previous posts!) Cream is also very affectionate, but she is a bit more independent. They also are super goofy and playful. Watching them play is such a treat!” said their rescuer in an update post.

In other good news, euthanasia rates at shelters have been rapidly declining for the past ten years. Falling more than 75 percent since 2009, big city shelters have moved toward adoption instead of putting animals down. According to the ASPCA, 6.5 million cats and dogs enter shelters around the United States each year. In 2011, that number was 7.2 million. And euthanasia has declined, around 1.5 million animals are euthanized annually, down from 2.6 million in 2011.

More families own pets than ever before. Luckily, the cultural awareness around shelters and pet adoption has grown in people’s daily lives and what they see in the media.

Thanks to Boomers Buddies Animal Rescue and their amazing work, these babies are now safe and have their whole life ahead of them! The rescue urges their followers to spay or neuter their pets to ensure the possibility of one less unwanted litter that may wind up in a shelter or worse, euthanized.
