The Bezos Earth Fund has announced the opening of submissions for the $100 million AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge, inviting the global AI community to contribute innovative solutions to critical environmental problems. This initiative seeks to harness the power of artificial intelligence to address pressing issues in biodiversity Conservation, sustainable proteins, power grid optimization, and other visionary solutions aimed at mitigating Climate change and protecting nature.
Dr. Amen Ra Mashariki, Director of AI and Data Strategies at the Bezos Earth Fund, emphasizes the urgency of this endeavor in an email. She expressed that climate change and nature loss are among the world’s most difficult problems. People are already using artificial intelligence to monitor greenhouse gas emissions, detect methane leaks and forest fires, and advance a clean energy economy — but it’s time to do more, faster. The focus areas of the grand challenge include:
Biodiversity Conservation: AI can be pivotal in protecting endangered species and restoring wild habitats. By leveraging image and sound recognition technologies, AI can help identify and safeguard millions of species yet to be discovered.
Sustainable Proteins: With the growing global population, there is a pressing need to find environmentally friendly protein sources. AI can assist in developing new meat alternatives that are both delicious and affordable, reducing the environmental impact of food production.
Power Grid Optimization: Integrating renewable energy into electricity grids is crucial for achieving net zero emissions. AI can optimize power flows and balance supply and demand, thus enhancing grid resilience and expanding energy access to millions.
Wildcard Solutions: The challenge also invites out-of-the-box ideas that leverage AI to address Climate change and nature loss, encouraging innovative approaches beyond the specified focus areas.
The Grand Challenge is open to U.S.-based 501(c)(3) entities and global academic institutions, with the opportunity for collaboration across international borders. The initiative will unfold in two phases:
Phase 1: Up to 30 Seed Grantees will be selected to receive $50,000 each, along with mentorship from AI and environmental experts. Proposals should clearly outline the problem, the proposed AI solution, its potential impact, and scalability.
Phase 2: Seed Grantees will participate in a virtual Innovation Sprint, receiving expert Support to develop detailed implementation plans. Up to 15 teams will be chosen as Implementation Grantees, each receiving up to $2 million to bring their solutions to life.
Following the implementation phase, awardees will test and refine their solutions over two years, culminating in the AI for Climate and Nature Summit in 2025.
Eligible organizations are encouraged to submit their proposals by July 30 and attend the virtual information session on June 20 to learn more. This Grand Challenge represents a unique opportunity to accelerate efforts against Climate change and nature loss through the innovative use of AI.
