Disturbing reports have emerged regarding the treatment of migrants along the border in Eagle Pass, Texas. Emails shared with CNN by the Texas Department of Public Safety reveal concerns expressed by a trooper-medic about the inhumane treatment of migrants and orders they received. The trooper claimed that medics were instructed to push people back into the water towards Mexico and were forbidden from providing water to migrants.

According to the email, disturbing incidents occurred during a seven-hour period, including a 4-year-old girl passing out in 100-degree heat after being pushed towards Mexico and a man sustaining a significant leg laceration while attempting to rescue his child from razor wire placed on a deterrence buoy in the Rio Grande. Other distressing incidents involved a 15-year-old boy with a broken leg, a 19-year-old woman having a miscarriage while trapped in wire, and the tragic deaths of a mother and one of her children while attempting to cross the river.
The trooper-medics expressed their concerns and called for changes to the Operation Lone Star policies implemented by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. They emphasized the need for humane treatment, recognizing the migrants as individuals created in the image of God.
The Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department are currently in discussions about possible actions against Texas due to concerns over Governor Abbott’s border operation. The reports have drawn attention to the treatment of migrants and the potential dangers they face, including drowning risks and extreme temperatures.
Both the DPS and the Texas National Guard have responded to the allegations. DPS spokesperson Travis Considine stated that the Office of the Inspector General is investigating the incident, and troopers have been instructed to provide water and treat injuries. The Texas Military Department’s public affairs office clarified that no orders were given to push migrants back into the water or deny them drinking water.
These reports highlight the importance of treating all individuals with dignity and respect, regardless of their immigration status. As discussions continue regarding the actions taken by Texas, it remains crucial to prioritize the well-being and safety of migrants, enforcing immigration laws while upholding human rights.
