Lindy Cain from Austin, Texas, recently shared a touching video of her dog, Lola, grieving the loss of her senior canine companion, Ziva. Ziva wasn’t just a pet to Cain; she was a cherished friend who had been with her from her teenage years into adulthood.
Cain first met Ziva as a 3-month-old puppy while volunteering at a local shelter. Found alone in a flower bed in Houston, Ziva’s silky black fur and big brown eyes captured Cain’s heart immediately. Over the years, Ziva became an integral part of Cain’s life, always offering quiet companionship.
Two and a half years ago, Cain introduced Lola to the family. A nervous puppy from a breeder, Lola found comfort and confidence by following Ziva’s lead. Sadly, Ziva was diagnosed with terminal nasal cancer, and despite all efforts, she eventually had to be put to rest.
Lola’s mourning has been evident. She often seeks out Ziva’s ashes and collar, showing signs of sadness and a longing for her companion. Research supports that dogs, like humans, go through a mourning process when they lose a fellow pet, exhibiting changes in behavior such as increased attention-seeking and reduced activity.
To help Lola cope, Cain brought a new puppy into their home. While this new addition can’t replace Ziva, it has brought some joy and comfort back into Lola’s life, allowing both her and Cain to cherish the happy memories they had with Ziva.
