Tesla has introduced an exciting new feature called “Charge on Solar,” allowing owners of its electric vehicles to charge their cars using excess solar power. As renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro become increasingly prevalent, there is a growing need to efficiently store and utilize the surplus energy they generate. Tesla aims to address this challenge by enabling owners of solar systems, Powerwalls, and Tesla vehicles to maximize the value of their home’s solar energy.

Previously mentioned in Tesla’s mobile app update, the “Charge on Solar” feature has now been officially launched. It is available to Tesla owners in the United States and Canada who meet the following hardware and software requirements:

  • Hardware: Model S, Model 3, Model X, or Model Y; Powerwall with on-site solar
  • Software: 2023.26 or higher for the vehicle; 23.12.10 or higher for the Powerwall; 4.22.5 or higher for the Tesla app

With “Charge on Solar,” Tesla vehicles can utilize excess solar energy produced by the owner’s solar system. By setting charge limits through the Tesla app, owners can ensure their electric vehicles are charged using surplus solar power, thereby maximizing the value of their home’s solar system.

Here’s how it works: When the vehicle’s charge level is below the designated limit, it charges from both solar energy and the grid. Once the charge level surpasses the set limit, the vehicle automatically switches to charging solely from excess solar energy. The charge limit can be adjusted within the app, allowing users to increase the lower limit to charge faster if desired.

Additionally, Tesla’s scheduling feature allows owners to stop charging with solar after a specific time, particularly useful if energy consumption is expected to increase during that period.

By integrating solar power with electric vehicle charging, Tesla’s “Charge on Solar” feature promotes sustainability, reducing dependence on the grid and maximizing the utilization of renewable energy sources. With this innovative solution, Tesla continues to lead the way in creating a greener and more sustainable future.

Harness the power of the sun and drive with sunshine. Experience the joy of emission-free driving while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable planet with Tesla’s “Charge on Solar” feature.
