The Food & Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating a “multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to bagged peaches.”
68 people from 9 states have been infected between June 29 and Aug. 3. No deaths have been reported.
The contaminated peaches were sold under the Wawona brand name in 2-pound clear, plastic bags at ALDI stores in 16 states, according to the agencies’ food safety alert.
ALDI has recalled peaches in the following states: Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
The Minnesota Department of Health also identified peaches linked to the outbreak being sold at Target which has since recalled the products.
The FDA is still investigating the source of the outbreak, and advises anyone who has purchased bagged peaches from affected retailers to throw them away.
Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps and, for more severe cases, a high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, or a rash. Salmonella can be spread between hands and contaminated surfaces and when people eat raw or undercooked food.
This outbreak comes as onions from Thomson International have been recalled after infecting 869 people with Salmonella.
