As freezing temperatures sweep across the nation, plunging temperatures to record-breaking lows, it’s crucial to remember that our furry companions and wildlife are vulnerable to the harsh winter conditions. Dogs and cats, in particular, face a significant risk of injury, illness, and even death during cold weather and winter storms. Astonishingly, many of these incidents often go unreported. To ensure the well-being of our animal friends, here are some valuable tips provided by PETA.
The most effective way to protect your companion animals is to keep them indoors. Dogs chained outside and “outdoor cats” often lack proper access to food, water, shelter, and veterinary care. Just like humans, they are ill-equipped to survive freezing temperatures and extreme weather conditions, making them susceptible to frostbite and exposure-related illnesses. By bringing them indoors, you provide a warm and safe environment, ensuring their well-being.
For dogs that need to venture outside, protective gear can make a world of difference. Coats help keep them comfortable in the cold, but be sure to remove wet jackets immediately upon returning home. Secure harnesses prevent dogs from escaping during walks, and booties protect their sensitive paw pads from the frozen ground. Remember to keep walks short, especially for shorthaired breeds.
While taking care of your pets is essential, it’s also important to consider the welfare of wildlife. During extreme winter conditions, provide birds and other wild animals with access to an emergency water supply by filling a heavy non-metal water bowl (metal can cause tongues to freeze). Break the surface ice at least twice a day to ensure they can access the water they need.
If you come across companion animals left chained or penned outside 24/7 without adequate shelter from the elements, take action. Note the exact location of the animals and promptly alert local law enforcement authorities. Leaving animals to suffer in severe weather conditions can lead to legal consequences, as those responsible may be prosecuted for their negligence.
In these frigid times, we need to extend our compassion and care to all creatures, both domestic and wild. By following these simple steps, we can make a significant difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of our beloved animals during cold weather. Remember, a small effort on our part can go a long way in saving lives and reducing animal suffering.
