Study Finds Plastic Additives in Seabirds Around the Globe

A recent study showed that half of the global population of seabirds have plastic additives in their bodies.

Approximately 52% of the world’s seabirds have accumulated plastic chemical components in their bodies. 

This startling research was discovered after 18 universities around the world teamed up to do a study. Researching the effects of plastic pollution on the world’s seabird population.

Hideshige Takada, a professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, said, “Ingestion of plastic by seabirds is growing on a global scale. There is an urgent need to switch to low-toxicity additives that do not accumulate in the bodies of living organisms.”

The team of researchers estimated that 30% of seabirds accumulated these plastic additives in their bodies after consuming plastic objects. While the rest consumed them through their diet.

This research revealed the shocking news that we all should have suspected. As seabirds are one kind of animal most in danger of plastic pollution. As they scavenge the seas which are heavy with plastic waste and chemicals.

If they do not directly ingest plastic, they still indirectly ingest it through the fish that they eat. As sea creatures are also exposed to high amounts of plastic waste and regularly consume it.

This study is proof that we need that creatures all over the world are suffering from our plastic Pollution. And it is time that we do something about it once and for all.
