Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has unveiled a sweeping 10-point plan to prepare the country for the growing climate emergency, urging citizens to mobilize before it’s too late. According to The Guardian, Sánchez pointed to the devastating August wildfires—which burned an area six times the size of Ibiza and killed four people—as proof that society cannot afford to wait.

Over the past five years, Spain’s climate disasters have caused more than 20,000 deaths and €32 billion in damages. Sánchez warned that denial of global heating is costing lives, calling Climate change “a common enemy that lies beyond ideologies.” He criticized politicians and social media voices spreading misinformation, stressing that “Climate change kills” and that every delay increases the danger and cost.

The prime minister’s plan includes creating a national civil protection agency, building a network of climate refuges, and rethinking land and forest management. He emphasized that fires of this magnitude—over 300,000 hectares burned this summer—cannot be fought in summer alone, but through year-round prevention like careful grazing, sustainable agriculture, and improved irrigation. Additional measures will boost firefighting capacity, strengthen water resilience, and provide funding for rebuilding communities after disasters.

Sánchez also highlighted rural depopulation as a critical issue, arguing that keeping people on the land can help reduce combustible material and mitigate extreme fires. The government’s proposals aim not only to manage immediate threats like floods, wildfires, and droughts but also to accelerate the broader green transition across Spain.

For Sánchez, the message is urgent yet hopeful: the window to act is still open if society chooses to respond collectively. Protecting the environment, supporting sustainable farming, and shifting toward renewable energy are all part of building a “Spain that’s greener” rather than one scarred by fire and flood.

Moments like this remind us that safeguarding the planet means listening to science, protecting communities, and embracing solutions rooted in resilience. Each of us has the power to Support a safer, healthier, and more sustainable future—by backing climate action and choosing plant-based ways of living that lighten our footprint on the earth.
