A dog named Dutchess has finally been adopted after being called ‘ugly’ by potential adopters and struggling to find a home for months.
Dutchess came to the Orange County Animal Services in Orlando at the end of 2022 because of a landlord issue, Fox 35 Orlando reported. The poor pop had trouble finding a home because of a facial deformity under her eyes. The deformity caused small bumps on the bottom of her eyelids.
“Sometimes the hardest thing for us to see is one of our dogs get ignored. We see their faces every day, and we do what we can to keep their spirits up. But we know sitting in a kennel, day after day, and watching people walk by on the other side of those bars has to take its toll. It is especially hard when no one even stops to look at you. When you have to watch other dogs get pulled, get taken out, get taken home,” the shelter wrote on Facebook.
The shelter said that the hardest part was to hear what potential adopters said about Dutchess. They would say she looks so ugly, ask what was wrong with her, and even say that she would never get adopted.
“It doesn’t affect her in any way except one: people cannot seem to get past it,” the shelter wrote. “The heartbreaking part is that Dutchess absolutely adores everyone. She runs up to the kennel doors every day, excited for the new day, relentlessly optimistic.”
Thanks to the post from the facility, Dutchess found a way to the Rescue Dogs Dream Inc shelter, where she was then placed in a foster home. The rescue added that Dutchess would get surgery to remove the growths under her eyes after a veterinary surgeon “determined” the growths to be “uncomfortable for her.”
The rare skin cysts were removed, and after the post about Dutchess on Facebook went viral, an outpouring of applications came in for the pup. Dutchess eventually recovered from surgery and joined her new family where she was renamed Lena. The dog’s new pawrents told Fox 35 Orlando that she “is the sweetest dog they have ever met.”
“She now has a new Mom and Dad to spoil her rotten (Dad works from home), and she has a new brother to play with, in her privacy fenced yard,” Rescue Dogs Dream Inc told the outlet. “She gets to go on hikes and adventures, and she is a cherished part of the family.”
