Serbia Erupts in Protest Over New Law That Pollutes Waters and Destroys Farmlands

Serbia erupted in chaos as anti-government protesters blocked bridges and roadways, causing police to get involved in the protest.

Hundreds of protesters appeared at the capital Belgrade, the northern city of Novi Sad, among other locations to protest. They blocked roadways and bridges protesting the laws on property expropriation and referendum.

Police officers intervened and started making arrests as helicopters flew overhead. However, protesters warned that this will not be the last protest. Environmental groups and civil society organizations are angry over the lowered referendum threshold and allowance for the quick seizure of private property.

The change in laws could help the Rio Tinto company launch a lithium mine in western Serbia that would destroy farmland and pollute the waters, despite the public’s disapproval.

Environmental issues in Serbia have been ignored by those in power, forcing civilians to begin protesting for their rights to a healthy environment. Adding a new mine to Serbia would only increase pollution, putting even more people in danger.

If the Serbian people are not listened to, they have already promised to continue protesting for their rights and the environment, despite the government’s actions.
