A young fox cub was given a new lease on life by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). Found lethargic and severely dehydrated, the fox cub had endured a shocking ordeal, trapped for three weeks with a piece of litter tightly wrapped around his neck. The cub was located in Acocks Green, Birmingham after concerned members of the public alerted the RSPCA.

The brown block of litter, wider than the cub’s ear-span, had significantly impacted its ability to eat or drink, resulting in emaciation. This distressing tale highlights the harmful impact of improperly discarded trash on our local wildlife.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Cara Gibbon underscored the avoidable nature of this incident. The young fox’s suffering could have been bypassed if litter was disposed of appropriately. Fortunately, the cub was transferred to a wildlife center following the successful removal of the litter, beginning its rehabilitation journey.

Over the past three years, the RSPCA has received over 10,000 calls concerning animals distressed by litter, reflecting a widespread issue. On average, the charity responds to almost 10 reports daily about animals injured, trapped, or even killed due to litter.

RSPCA scientific officer, Evie Button, stressed the profound hazard litter poses to wildlife. The reported incidents represent merely the tip of the iceberg; countless animals likely suffer unnoticed and unreported. Litter can cause severe injuries, suffocation, or slow weakening as animals struggle to find food and water.

Yet amidst the troubling statistics, this story provides a glimmer of hope. Rescued from the brink, the fox cub is now receiving the necessary treatment, signaling brighter days ahead. His tale underscores the importance of responsible litter disposal in protecting wildlife from similar fates.
