A new opinion piece by Tiffany D. Joseph in The Hill sheds light on the Republican Party’s ongoing strategy to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA), not with bold repeal bills, but by slowly starving it of funding. This includes proposed $880 billion cuts to Medicaid—an essential lifeline for 72 million Americans.
The ACA, which turned 15 this March, expanded access to affordable health care and helped reduce the U.S. uninsured rate from 15% in 2013 to 8.2% by 2024. It also banned denial of coverage due to pre-existing conditions and allowed young adults to stay on their parents’ plans. But this progress is now in jeopardy. According to Joseph, the new Trump-aligned budget slashes Support for Medicaid and health insurance subsidies, while ACA navigator funding has been gutted—from $100 million to just $10 million—undermining outreach to vulnerable populations.
While this may seem like just another political move, it’s a public health crisis in the making—and that matters for the planet, too. Healthcare access is a key pillar of environmental justice. Poor and marginalized communities already suffer most from pollution, climate impacts, and lack of access to plant-based food options. Weakening the ACA would only make it harder for people to afford preventive care and manage chronic illnesses, which are often made worse by environmental harm.
Let’s be real: defunding healthcare to finance tax cuts for the wealthy isn’t just cruel—it’s unsustainable. It increases suffering, destabilizes communities, and puts even more pressure on emergency services and public health resources. That’s bad news for animals, ecosystems, and everyone else trying to build a better future.
If you care about health, equity, and the planet, speak up. Support local and national leaders who champion healthcare access. Go plant-based, stay informed, and push for policies that care for people and the Earth together.
