Eco-conscious advocates are sounding the alarm after the Environmental Protection Agency placed more than 160 employees from its Office of Environmental justice on administrative leave. This sudden move has shocked many who see the agency’s efforts to protect low-income and minority communities from Pollution as more essential than ever.
According to Coral Davenport of The New York Times, the staffers’ leave coincides with President Trump’s plan to eliminate government programs dedicated to environmental justice, which often benefit communities located near factories or other high-Pollution sites. The Trump administration argues these initiatives are “radical and wasteful,” but critics point out they serve some of the most vulnerable Americans. Observers say the mass leave is the first step in shuttering the office, which recently expanded under President Biden’s climate law to address toxic air, water contamination, and other hazards disproportionately affecting marginalized groups.
Adding to the upheaval is Elon Musk’s new “Department of Government Efficiency,” which has reportedly been pressing federal workers to resign. Meanwhile, an online mapping tool known as “EJScreen,” used to identify overburdened areas, was abruptly taken offline. With Environmental justice staff sidelined, many worry about the fate of crucial Pollution monitoring and enforcement, as well as future public-health protections.
This office has a storied history dating back to its founding in the early 1990s under President George H.W. Bush, and it was significantly bolstered by the Biden administration. Advocates like Margie Alt of the Climate Action Campaign believe losing this office undercuts the EPA’s core mission to safeguard public health, especially for communities hit hardest by Pollution.
Now is the time to make your voice heard.
